Merchant Carlos Dorión traveled to New York for studies, and upon his return, his family organized a dinner where he expressed his desire to start a food business in the Central American country, Guatemala.
The Winning Idea
The idea circulating in his mind was to sell the well-known and popular hot dogs.
In 1930, Carlos Dorión received a wonderful surprise from his mother, who asked him to buy tortillas and mentioned that she wanted them a little larger than usual.
Carlos Dorión's mother took one of the tortillas, placed a sausage, some guacamole, and cabbage on it. When she gave her son a taste of her creation, he was surprised by the exquisite flavor, the result of the combination of the flavors of each ingredient.
That was the day when the so-called Mixes were born, and the name was given by Carlos Dorión’s mother.
A Bit of History
On February 14, 1930, Carlos Dorión's establishment called Mixtas Frankfurt opened its doors in the capital city of Guatemala to all its fellow nationals. Since then, Mixes have become one of the typical dishes of Guatemalan cuisine.
Carlos Dorión was inspired by the sausages used for his business's flagship dish, and he treasures the recipes for the guacamole, cabbage, and spicy ingredients that he adds to the Mixes.
